A plumbing and Star Plus Electrical service provider has been fined $125,000 for a sophisticated scheme to mislead consumers. The Federal Court found that between 2017 and 2019, Star Plus Group Pty Ltd and its related business SPG(SA) Pty Ltd posted 126 fake reviews on Yellow Pages and Product Review websites and developed dummied up proof of purchase documents. The companies also used their own website to falsely advertise their high customer ratings. The Commissioner for Consumer Affairs took legal action against the two businesses after finding that they had breached the Australian Consumer Law. The companies have now acknowledged their conduct and the Court’s finding in a notice published on their websites.
