Among the many Far West 42nd Street residential towers, Atelier stands out with its cool, nautical-inspired slab construction that recalls oceanliners docked nearby in the 1940s. Architect Costas Kondylis conceived a distinctive facade that features four 2-story-high protruding elements at each corner, alternating between gridded and clear glass. The effect is striking and dynamic, and reminiscent of a finely tooled key with alternating notches that open to reveal the vault of the building’s structure.
The Atelier’s unique architecture also features a distinct aesthetic that combines bluish glass and bold accents to add a sense of dynamism to its sleek, svelte design. It’s the perfect balance of contemporary aesthetics and nautical appeal to complement its central location by the Hudson River.
Conceived by Costas Kondylis and developed by Carmel Partners, Atelier was designed to celebrate the history of the neighborhood through an artistic control of its exterior spaces. Real estate developer Carmel Partners commissioned Surfacedesign to develop a landscape that pays homage to the building’s proximity to the former Los Angeles Garment District, inspired by the Bauhaus textile patterns of Anni Albers.
Atelier’s innovative community leisure areas are designed to create a luxurious experience for residents, offering indoor/outdoor entertainment lounge areas, fire pits, a catering kitchen, pet spa and smart package lockers. Additionally, an infinity-edge pool, pool cabanas and a pool butler are all standard.
